Back Porch Haiku (2013 – 2019) is Marjorie Bruhmuller’s second haiku and senryu collection. Some of the poems have been previously published, while others appear for the first time. The majority are influenced by life in the Quebec Eastern Townships, where the author makes her home. Many have a strong sensory appeal that seems to insert the reader into the action.

tasting the sap’s
tinny sweetness

Others combine a subtle sense of humour with an appreciation for nature and a quiet rural lifestyle.

rush hour!

All four seasons are represented, in ways that reflect the changing landscape of the Eastern Townships and the coping skills used to survive winter’s harshness.

an icy branch
leans toward the window
hot fire blazing

The contrast between ice and fire also brings to mind Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice” and the poet’s musing about what might destroy the world – desire or hatred. In these anxious and troubled times, the debate is even more relevant.

Back Porch Haiku (2013 – 2019) is noteworthy as well for the charming photographs and pictures featured on the front cover and interior pages. This is a delightful and thought-provoking collection that will appeal to city and country dwellers alike.
